Apple, Samsung go head to head in patent litigation again

News:  Apple and Samsung return to a California court this week for another round in the blockbuster patent trial between the two biggest smartphone makers.

A jury trial opens Tuesday to reconsider damages awarded last year in the case stemming fromApple's allegation that its South Korean rival illegally copied technology from the iPhone and iPad.

The new trial became necessary after a judge cut some $450 million from a damage award of more than $1 billion to be paid by Samsung.

Judge Lucy Koh, in her ruling in March, affirmed the remainder of the award, amounting to $598.9 million. But a new trial must be held to reconsider some of the allegations.

Apple accused its rival of massive and willful copying of its designs and technology for smartphones and tablets and won the landmark case in a jury decision in August 2012. But the case has been on hold pending multiple appeals.

The California case is among several pending in courts and administrative agencies around the world between the two electronics giants, each of which accuses the other of infringing on its patents.

After years of following and refining the iPhone's pioneering innovations a strategy that resulted in bitter patent battles with Apple Samsung has dethroned its California-based rival to become the world's top smartphone maker.

Android KitKat leak suggests big improvements for cheap phones, wearables

News:  When you thought we were ready for Google's next announcement, along comes some fresh information, courtesy of regular Google news-breaker, Amir Efrati. He's apparently taken a look at confidential documents outlining what's going on with the next big mobile OS update. The Android KitKat iteration will apparently tackle that tricky fragmentation issue, and has been designed to work well even on lesser-specced Google-powered handsets. The new Android OS "optimizes memory use in every major component," and will include tools to make memory-friendly apps for "entry-level devices" with memory even as low as 512MB.

The other major point is how Google, a well-known proponent of wearables, is already is prepping for even more smartwatches and visors on its mobile operating system. The new version will reportedly include support for three new sensors: geomagnetic rotation vector, step detection and step counters, which could be Android's way of answering Apple's inclusion of a dedicated motion processor in its latest iPhone. The source reckons these are geared towards Google's rumored smart watch -- or possibly glass. Google is apparently still working on making NFC a bigger deal, and has also worked internally on improving smartphones' skills controlling your TV and other devices. Apparently, this will involve unifying how Android deals with IR blasters, rather than the fragmented approach brought by phone makers including Samsung, LG, Sony and HTC. Bluetooth is also rumored to see significant improvements, with Bluetooth HID over GATT and Message Access Profile both mentioned what Android-running hardware can talk with.

iPhone 5s battery life issue acknowledged by Apple to be affecting few units

 

News:  Apple's new iPhone 5s is courting controversy again, after the company acknowledged that some units of the phone have a manufacturing defect that is leading to the battery draining faster.

The Cupertino giant told the New York Times that a small number of iPhone 5s units have a manufacturing defect which is causing the issue, and that the company will replace these defective units.

"We recently discovered a manufacturing issue affecting a very limited number of iPhone 5s devices that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life," Teresa Brewer, an Apple spokeswoman. "We are reaching out to customers with affected phones and will provide them with a replacement phone." 

Apple has not specified the number of units affected by the issue or the particular batch that's affected.

iPad Air review

News: Remember "thinnovation"? That was Apple's tagline when it first introduced theMacBook Air, a laptop so skinny it could fit in a manila envelope. Six years later, the company did something similar with its tablet lineup by introducing the iPad Air. As its name suggests, the Air comes with a revamped design that sheds almost half a pound of weight, along with a couple millimeters of thickness and a significant amount of bezel area. At the same time, it maintains the same 9.7-inch Retina display that defined the last two iPads. While that's impressive enough in its own right, Apple also managed to make the device more powerful, thanks to the same A7 chip that already powers the iPhone 5s.

The one part of the iPad Air that isn't any thinner or lighter is its price, which starts at the usual $499 for a 16GB WiFi-only model. From there, the MSRP goes as high as $929 for the most expensive configuration (that's the WiFi + Cellular model with 128 gigs of storage). As always, the Air is entering a highly competitive market just in time for the holidays. So will its strong performance and super-thin frame be enough to make you upgrade come November 1st? Apple sold 33.8 million iPhones this summer, but faces tough competition

News: In reporting its latest quarterly earnings today, Apple announced record fourth-quarter sales of iPhones -- 33.8 million, up 26 percent from 26.9 million in the same quarter last year -- along with virtually flat iPad sales of 14.1 million this quarter, up from 14 million last year. During the same period, arch-rival Samsung, whichjust reported its earnings last Thursday, sold 86 million smartphones, though Samsung's lineup has far more models than Apple's, including entry-level versions that don't compete directly with the iPhone. Samsung is facing its own challenges at the top of its range, and sold just 16 million of its flagship Galaxy S4 during the period, according to estimates. Apple continued to lead the tablet market, selling 14.1 million iPads in the quarter, compared to Samsung's 10.5 million -- though Samsung's tablet sales doubled from last year.

Apple earned $7.5 billion, on revenue of $37.5 billion. The quarterly earnings didn't include the iPad mini with Retina display or iPad Air, which were announced last week, and only included one week's worth of sales for the latest iPhones, the 5c and 5s, which Apple previously stated sold 9 million units during their first three days on the market. Apple is expected to provide some projections about sales for the new models in its quarterly earnings call, scheduled for later today.

This Week’s Apple Rumors, Ranked From Dumbest to Most Plausible

Each week, there are dozens of Apple rumors, reports, and patent filings that hint at what’s coming out of Cupertino next. Some are legit, but most are totally bogus. This week, much of what we’ve been hearing for the past few months was either validated or debunked at Apple’s October media event. But of course, we’re always wondering what’s next out of Cupertino. So we’ve parsed the week’s rumors, ranking them in order from “utterly ridiculous” to “duh, of course.” First up…

VERY DOUBTFUL: iPhone 6 This Summer, iWatch in the Works
Gene Munster, fierce proponent of Apple’s rumored television set issued a set of predictions for the company’s next year. Firstly, Munster predicts Apple’s iPhone 6 will launch in the summer with a larger display, and it’ll be a “blockbuster.” He also predicts a computerized iWatch is being developed. There’s been a lot of speculation that Apple’s next iPhone will feature a larger display, but it seems that Apple has switched to a fall launch schedule for the iPhone. As for the iWatch, yeah, there’s definitely some wearables action going on inside Apple research labs, but who knows when or how it’ll actually come to fruition. Here’s another theory: Maybe the iPhone 6 IS Apple’s television. Dun dun dunnnn.

DON’T COUNT ON IT: 65-inch Apple Television Coming in 2014
We’ve been hearing the whispers for years now, but still no Apple television has emerged from the shadows. Advanced Research analyst Masahiko Ishino says it’s on the way though: According to his sources, Apple is deciding on specifications of the 4K set. He said it would feature a “frameless” design, be available in 55- and 65-inch models, and fall in the $1,500 to $2,500 price range. It certainly seems like Apple will be getting into the 4K game now that its Mac Pro, out in December, is 4K capable. But it seems more likely to us — for now at least — that Apple may go the 4K Thunderbolt display route before it ventures into TV land. 

ASK AGAIN LATER: Apple Patent Uses Human Recognition to Personalize Content
A patent application published Thursday describes how Apple could use our increasingly powerful mobile devices to sense a person’s physical features and customize content using that information. This would potentially aid in the privacy of content consumption, while making it simpler and safer. Basically, the concept assigns profiles and privileges to the different types of people that enter a room, or stand in front of a display — it would recognize a child versus an adult versus an elderly person, for example. If you, an adult, are watching an R-rated movie and it detects that a child has walked in the room, it would automatically halt movie playback until the child leaves, for example. You could also log in to devices using this tech. The idea certainly seems feasible, but such technology could be implemented a number of ways, and may still be a few years off (if Apple did decide to use this technology in the first place). 

ASK AGAIN LATER: Apple Working on iPad Keyboards
It didn’t surface at Apple’s media event this week, but Apple has reportedly been thinking about creating its own iPad keyboard. The report stresses that the only thing glimpsed thus far have been prototypes. iPad and tablet-specific keyboards are fairly popular accessories for those looking to do more than just casual word-processing on their mobile machines. If Apple made its own, while not a novel idea, it would certainly be a moneymaking one. Perhaps we’ll see Apple-made iPad keyboards by the time the holidays roll around…or maybe Apple will just continue to let third-party 

manufacturers control that realm.

SIGNS POINT TO YES: iPad Mini Supplies to Be ‘Ridiculously’ Constrained
That pixel-packed Retina display comes at a price. Every time Apple has released a new Retina display product, supplies have been tight during launch time. The new iPad mini with Retina display will reportedly be no exception. IHS analyst Rhoda Alexander says Retina iPad mini numbers will be “ridiculously tight” when it’s set to debut this November.

Don’t Be Silly. Lock Down and Encrypt Your Smartphone

Your smartphone is your most portable computer. It’s also a treasure trove of personal information. You wouldn’t leave your laptop unlocked in public, so why leave your phone unprotected? Lock up that data and encrypt it.

Social media, budgeting and finance apps, photos, address book, and email — they’re all filled with details about you and the people you know. Yet for some reason a third of smartphone users in the U.S. still don’t bother setting up password security on their phones. It’s a shame because using a four-digit pin or a pattern lock is one of the easiest ways to keep thieves out of your phone. Trust us, the person that finds your phone in the back of a cab or swipes it from your open bag while you’re on the bus isn’t a criminal mastermind. On the other hand, they will be able to figure out from your emails when you’ll be on vacation and what time you leave for work. 

FCC officials said that in 2012 smartphone theft increased from 8 percent to 42 percent in New York City over a 10 year period. The agency suggested a system where you call your carrier to brick your phone as soon as its stolen to reduce identity theft. But most people who lose their smartphones spend at least some time retracing their steps in the hopes of, you know, finding it. In fact, having your carrier enable such a scorched earth protocol kind of renders tracking services like Apple’s ‘Find My iPhone,’ obsolete. 

If your phone does fall into the hands of the smarter-than-average thief, encrypting the contents will add an extra level of security that could mean the difference between a minor inconvenience and dealing with various agencies trying to restore your identity. Android’s encryption feature requires a passcode entered into the phone every time it’s powered back on. It can also protect any SD cards you use with your Android phone. To turn on encryption, navigate to Settings > Security. The only downside is that whenever you do turn on your phone with encryption, it’ll take an hour to decipher all your information. 

With iOS, just having a passcode turned on on your phone encrypts your information. But if you’re looking for the even more protection, you can have your phone delete all its content if the passcode is entered incorrectly 10 times in a row. Head to Settings > General > Passcode Lock. Scroll to the bottom and turn on Erase Data. Note that once your phone is erased, you’ll no longer be able to use Find My Phone to track its location. But if your personal information is more precious than a piece of hardware (which it should be), this is a great way to protect your identity.

Apple unveiled new ipad air and ipad mini

इस इवेंट में ही कंपनी ने दो नए 'मैक बुक प्रो' की भी घोषणा की। जिसमें से एक 13 इंच स्क्रीन और दूसरा 15 इंच की स्क्रीन वाला होगा। साथ ही जून में घोषित 'मैक प्रो' के बारे में बताया कि वह भी जल्द ही बाजार में उपलब्ध होगा।

न्यू मैकबुक प्रो 13 इंच के 3 मॉडल हैं। इसमें 2.4 से 2.6 गीगाह‌र्ट्ज वाला प्रोसेसर लगा है और रेटिना डिसप्ले भी है। इसका बैटरी बैकअप 9 घंटे का बताया जा रहा है। साथ ही इसका वजन 1.56 किलोग्राम और कीमत 1299 से 1799 डॉलर के बीच रखी गई है।

Apple retains multitouch patent thanks to Patent Office ruling, forces competition to seek alternatives

Sorry, anonymous Apple multitouch patent challenger -- your victory isn't only temporary, it's also short-lived. The US Patent Office has decided to uphold patent No. 7,479,949 after tentatively invalidating it in December of 2012, which could mean bad news for many of Cupertino's competitors. If those numbers sound vaguely familiar, that's because they're known to most people as the controversial multitouch patent (that covers the downward-swipe gesture as seen in the video after the break) that Apple used against Palm, HTC and Samsung in court. In fact, it was one of the two patents that led to the import ban of some Samsung devices in the US. Needless to say, it now remains a powerful weapon for lawsuits in Apple's arsenal, and rivals best find a way to work around it on their designs.

Samsung launch new low cost smartphone

कंपनी के मुताबिक यह फोन नौ भारतीय भाषाओं हिंदी, पंजाबी, बंगाली, मराठी, गुजराती, कन्नड़, मलयालम, तेलगू और तमिल को सपोर्ट करेंगे। इन भाषाओं में इंटरनेट इस्तेमाल की सुविधा के अलावा एसएमएस भी भेजे जा सकेंगे। इन भाषाओं में कई एप्लीकेशन भी उपभोक्ताओं को उपलब्ध कराए जाएंगे।

दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी फोन निर्माता कंपनी ने गैर अंग्रेजी भाषी उपभोक्ताओं को आकर्षित करने के लिए यह कदम उठाया है। देश के स्मार्टफोन बाजार में सैमसंग की 26 फीसद हिस्सेदारी है। कंपनी के मोबाइल और आइटी विभाग के मुखिया विनीत तनेजा ने बताया कि ट्रेंड और स्टार प्रो लोगों को स्मार्टफोन का देशी अनुभव देंगे। हमने इनमें 4.1 एंड्रॉयड जेली बीन ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम दिया है। गैलेक्सी सीरीज में कंपनी ने 14 फोन उतारे हैं।

Apple confirms October 22nd event, still has 'a lot to cover'

The rumors, they are true. Apple's ready to take the wraps off of something big next week, just in time to seriously impact our collective holiday spending -- and just a little more than a month after that big iPhone event. Apple Wednesday announced that iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c will be available in more than a dozen countries on Friday, November 1, including India and Mexico. The company also confirmed that theiPhone 5s and iPhone 5c will be available in Italy, Russia, Spain and more than 25 additional countries a week before that on Friday, October 25.

iPhone 5s comes with the Apple-designed A7 64-bit chip, all-new 8 megapixel iSight camera with True Tone flash and Touch ID fingerprint sensor. iPhone 5c features an all-new design, comes in multiple colours and packs internals almost identical to the iPhone 5.

iOS 7 review

 

The changes to Apple's iOS software became apparent as I drove to the headquarters of the company's rival, Google. As I navigated using Apple's mapping app, I noticed one of my favorite attributes was missing: the directions for each next turn presented in green boxes that resemble highway signs.

Many of the changes in Apple's operating system for mobile devices are cosmetic. Gone are three-dimensional icons that mimic real-world counterparts, such as a magazine rack for the Newsstand app. They are replaced by larger, two-dimensional icons sporting abstract designs and pastel colors. Apple also extended that new look to many of its apps. In Maps, the green boxes are replaced with solid white across the top.

It didn't take long to realize that deeper down, the new iOS 7 software is the same as the one I've come to know.

The new software does have several functional improvements, but those take time to stumble upon. The good news is that even if you never discover them, you can still use your device the way you did before. The free update is available starting Wednesday.

Flickr app gains auto-upload feature in iOS 7 update

With several recent major updates including a grid UI and filters, Flickr is far from languishing in Yahoo's hands. Another refresh has just arrived for iOS 7, bringing automatic uploading from your camera roll to its servers at full resolution -- with sharing set to private by default. You'll also get automatic photo straightening using the Flickr editor, and Yahoo says that it's resolved Google sign-in issues, making sure "it doesn't happen again." If you're worried about clogging up your Flickr storage with multi-megapixel iPhone photos, fret not -- you'll still get a free terabyte.

Apple's iPad event reportedly set for October 22nd

AllThingsD seems to have some pretty solid sources within Apple's walls, as it was spot-on last month when it predicted the date of the iPhone event. Now, the publication is reporting that October 22nd is a date for all of us to circle on our virtual calendars -- provided we're interested in new iPads, Mac Pros and / or the upcoming OS X Mavericks. We haven't heard any official news of what Apple has up its sleeves, but we're pretty confident that it'll be a full show.

Loop turns almost any point-of-sale system into a mobile payment machine (hands-on)

In a small shop on University Avenue in Palo Alto, mobile payments vet Will Graylin proudly points out the point-of-sale (POS) system sitting next to the register. "This is a 13-year-old Hypercom," Will explains, emphasizing its age and the lack of modern mobile payment options. Then, he does something we haven't seen before: he puts his iPhone next to the mag-stripe reader, taps a button on his screen and the transaction gets processed as if he'd physically swiped his card.

Companies like Google, Isis and MasterCard (among others) are competing with each other to see who can establish an NFC-based mobile payments standard and build a strong enough ecosystem to support it, but Will -- along with co-founder George Wallner -- is approaching the highly competitive and nascent smartphone commerce market from an entirely new direction. The duo's new company, known as Loop, is debuting a new platform that will let you use your phone to make payments on nearly 90 percent of all POS systems in the country, even if they don't have any tech embedded inside that's capable of accepting contactless payments.
