Apple, Samsung go head to head in patent litigation again

News:  Apple and Samsung return to a California court this week for another round in the blockbuster patent trial between the two biggest smartphone makers.

A jury trial opens Tuesday to reconsider damages awarded last year in the case stemming fromApple's allegation that its South Korean rival illegally copied technology from the iPhone and iPad.

The new trial became necessary after a judge cut some $450 million from a damage award of more than $1 billion to be paid by Samsung.

Judge Lucy Koh, in her ruling in March, affirmed the remainder of the award, amounting to $598.9 million. But a new trial must be held to reconsider some of the allegations.

Apple accused its rival of massive and willful copying of its designs and technology for smartphones and tablets and won the landmark case in a jury decision in August 2012. But the case has been on hold pending multiple appeals.

The California case is among several pending in courts and administrative agencies around the world between the two electronics giants, each of which accuses the other of infringing on its patents.

After years of following and refining the iPhone's pioneering innovations a strategy that resulted in bitter patent battles with Apple Samsung has dethroned its California-based rival to become the world's top smartphone maker.

LG G Flex officially unveiled, with 6-inch 720p curved display

 

News: Tipping its toe in the niche curved display smartphone market along with Samsung (and its differently curved Galaxy Round), LG has released the much-anticipated G Flex smartphone in Korea only for now, with availability starting in November via all three major local carriers. No pricing has been announced for now. LG in a press note did also mention that availability in additional markets will be announced thereafter. 

Despite its low 720p resolution, the LG G Flex does seem to incorporate the current generation's best components, and can be considered a limited edition flagship from the Korean manufacturer. The Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean-based phablet is powered by a 2.26GHz Snapdragon 800 (MSM 8974) processor, an Adreno 330 GPU, and 2GB of RAM. It features a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a 2.1-megapixel rear camera. The G Flex powered by a 3,500mAh battery, weighs 177 grams, and is 7.9mm at its thinnest, while being 8.7mm at its thickest.

As for the 6-inch curved display, LG has revealed quite a few details about it - it's claimed to be the world's largest Plastic OLED display (P-OLED), which is supposedly ultra-light, ultra-thin and flexible. It's powered by a curved OLED panel, which is also built on plastic substrates instead of glass, supposedly giving the phone better durability. The display has features Real RGB technology to provide all three sub-pixels in one pixel, thereby making it "brighter and more precise."

The curved battery, as previously announced by LG Chem, is also supposedly amongst the first of its kind, using a patented Stack & Folding technology, meant to reduce the physical stress on the battery pack in curved form, and supposedly providing better stability and performance.

Samsung launch new low cost smartphone

 नई दिल्ली। दिग्गज मोबाइल निर्माता कंपनी सैमसंग ने त्योहारी सीजन को ध्यान में रखते हुए भारतीय बाजार में कम कीमत वाले दो स्मार्टफोन लॉन्च किए हैं। गैलेक्सी सीरीज के स्मार्टफोन ट्रेंड की कीमत 6,750 रुपये और स्टार प्रो की कीमत 8,290 रुपये है।

कंपनी के मुताबिक यह फोन नौ भारतीय भाषाओं हिंदी, पंजाबी, बंगाली, मराठी, गुजराती, कन्नड़, मलयालम, तेलगू और तमिल को सपोर्ट करेंगे। इन भाषाओं में इंटरनेट इस्तेमाल की सुविधा के अलावा एसएमएस भी भेजे जा सकेंगे। इन भाषाओं में कई एप्लीकेशन भी उपभोक्ताओं को उपलब्ध कराए जाएंगे।

Samsung Galaxy Round curved display smartphone launched as Note 3 variant

 

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd on Wednesday launched the world's first smartphone with a curved display, a variant of the Galaxy Note which moves the Asian giant a step closer to achieving wearable devices with flexible - even unbreakable - screens.

Curved displays are on the frontlines of Samsung's innovation war with rivals such as Apple Inc and LG Electronics Inc, as the South Korean firm seeks to expand its lead in the slowing market for high-end smartphones.

"It's a step forward for having unbreakable gadgets and flexible devices eventually. But for now, the new phone is more of a symbolic product," said Hana Daetoo Securities analyst Nam Dae-jong, adding that Samsung did not yet have capacity for large-scale production of curved touch-screens for the new Galaxy Round.

The Galaxy Round is Samsung's attempt to gauge consumer appetite for curved phones although its lack of other eye-catching features means it is unlikely to be a hit, he said.

"I don't think it'll be massively compelling enough for gadget buyers as the curved display doesn't come with many unique features," he said.

The Galaxy Round's 5.7-inch (14.4-centimetre) display has a slight horizontal curve and weighs less than the Galaxy Note 3, allowing a more comfortable grip than other flat-screen models on the market, Samsung said in a statement.

Pantech founder resigns as vice chairman due to firm's poor performance

Pantech's been mustering all it's got to win folks over with its smartphones, but poor business performance has prompted Park Byeong-yeop, the firm's founder and current vice chariman, to resign. Despite Samsung's recent $50 million investment, the firm's taking additional measures to solve its financial woes, which weren't eased by disappointing smartphone sales and a $46 million operating loss in Q2 2013. The Korean manufacturer is asking approximately 800 employees -- roughly a fourth of its workforce -- to take a voluntary, unpaid leave of absence for six months. If the outfit's circumstances haven't improved by the end of that period, it plans to ask another 800 folks to swap places with those on leave. Tough times are ahead for camp Pantech, but here's hoping the fiscal belt-tightening changes the state of its coffers.
