Rogers caves to demand, will carry the BlackBerry Z30 after all

 

 rather surprising about-face, Rogers announced today that despite earlier assertions to the contrary, the Canadian carrier will, indeed, carry the newly announced BlackBerry Z30. It initially told The Globe and Mail that it was going to pass on the latest BlackBerry handset due to limited shelf space and wanting to just pick "the biggest winners." However, apparently there was such demand for the phone from BlackBerry loyalists that Rogers has changed its tune. In a statement released today, Rogers not only states that this was in response to "customers' feedback and excitement about the device" but that it also has a "longstanding partnership with BlackBerry" and will "continue to be big supporters of the company and their products." There's no pricing or availability just yet, though Rogers did say it'll be available online, through its national reservation system and to its enterprise customers. So, if you're a Rogers customer who simply must get your hands on the latest handset from Waterloo, you're in luck. Because, let's face it, you might not have the chance ever again.

Google Search adds support for hashtags, pulls related info from Google+

The latest way Google is working social media into its search engine is with the use of familiar hashtags, but at least for now that doesn't include direct results from competitors like Facebook and Twitter. Available initially to users in the US and Canada, searches that include hashtags (like #ExpandNY, for example) will gain a right rail display relevant Google+ posts that were either shared publicly or to you. Even if you're not an avid user of the #, since Google+ autogenerates hashtags for many posts, it should be easy to find related info for pretty much any topic. According to Zaheed Sabur, there are also links to search said hashtag on other social sites, although which ones weren't specified. Even if you're in the right area you probably won't see the new feature just yet, as it's going live "within the next few hours."

Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear now on sale in the UK

If you've been looking to get your hands on Samsung's new Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear, boom, they're here. The company has kicked off another of its world tours to announce availability of its 5.7-inch smartphone and new smartwatch in 58 countries. In the UK, an unlocked Galaxy Note 3 will set you back £649 but is also available on nearly all of the major carriers (we're still waiting to hear from Three) -- starting at around £30 on a traditional contract, or free if you decide to sign up to a new early-upgrader tariff. The Galaxy Gear retails at £299, but Samsung thinks you could use a £100 discount if you bundle it with an unlocked Galaxy Note 3, for a total cost of £848. Customers in the US, Canada and Japan, however, will have to wait 'til October -- although preorders are already open.
