NSA cites executive order to defend its collection of cellphone location data

NewsThe 5 billion cellphone location records the NSA's reportedly collecting daily? Don't expect an apology. While it's hard to sustain shock and disbelief when we've been hearing new details about the government's information collecting formonths now, the National Security Agency saw fit to address concerns about the so-called Co-Traveler program in a statement today. The gist: The collection of massive amounts of location data is incidental in the agency's effort to "collect foreign intelligence information that is relevant to national security."
Interestingly, the statement references a Reagan-era executive order (12333, if you want to dig deep) to vindicate the agency's data-collection practices. That executive order, authorized in 1981, authorizes the collection of foreign intelligence information relevant to the nation's safety through means "consistent with applicable United States law." Additionally, the statement asserts that these surveillance activities don't violate FISA. The bottom line, though, is that the NSA won't be doubling back on its data collecting any time soon.

Samsung finally offering the ATIV Book 9 Plus in the US with a 256GB SSD, Core i7

Samsung finally offering the ATIV Book 9 Plus in the US with a 256GB SSD, Core i7
If you read our review of Samsung's new flagship Ultrabook, the ATIV Book 9 Plus, you know we mostly adore it: it's exceptionally thin, runs cool and rocks a best-in-class display. Unfortunately for some of the nerds reading Engadget, the laptop launched in the United States with just one configuration option -- a Core i5 model with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. Not good news for people who want bragging rights, or who need more storage, or who just like having choices. Now, at least, you get two options. Samsung just announced it will start selling a Core i7 version in the US, complete with 8GB of memory and a 256GB drive. Those specs bumps aside, this is otherwise the same laptop, with a low-glare, 3,200 x 1,800 screen and an aluminum chassis weighing in at 3.06 pounds. It won't actually be on shelves until early November, but you can pre-order it today for $1,800.

iPhone 5s and 5c shipping to regional carriers on October 1st, but not to US Cellular

iPhone 5s and 5c shipping to regional carriers on October 1st, but not to US Cellular
When your name is on a Major League Baseball stadium, and you're a mobile operator, you carry the iPhone. Unless you're US Cellular, that is. For reasons that cannot be comprehended by mere mortals, one of the United States' largest regional carriers still isn't offering the iPhone in any variant, despite promising back in May to carry Apple products before the year's end. In fact, things have gotten so bad over at USCC that its Facebook page has gone dead silent since September 13th, with customers far and wide ranting in the comments section about the carrier's inability to get the one phone they all want.

Making matters worse for USCC is the fact that Appalachian Wireless, C Spire, Bluegrass Cellular, Cellcom, GCI, MTA, Nex-Tech Wireless, Ntelos and Strata are all lined up to start selling both the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s on October 1st. We suppose even more could be added as time rolls on and the supply / demand balance rights itself, but it's probably high time for US Cellular holdouts to head on over to a rival. Patience only gets you so far, you know?

C Spire prepping gigabit 'Fiber to the Home' service, asks where to put it

C Spire prepping gigabit 'Fiber to the Home' service, asks where to put it
Gigabit internet access is all the rage these days, and C Spire is entirely willing to give in to peer pressure. It just announced an upcoming C Spire Fiber to the Home service that will supply 1Gbps internet access and IPTV to Mississippi residents sometime in 2014. Exactly where it arrives will depend on feedback, however. Much like Google, C Spire wants both municipal governments and residents to plead their case; the more vocal regions will get service first. Only local leaders can solicit C Spire at this stage, but everyone else will get their chance starting on September 30th.

Roku's new product line: it's as simple as 1, 2, 3 (hands-on)

Rokus new product line its as simple as 1, 2, 3 handson
To say that today's a big day for Roku is a bit of an understatement. Not only is the company revamping its entire product lineup, there's also the small matter of the UK launch of the Roku 3 to consider. Whereas before, American users had to decide between the LT, HD, 2XD and 3, the company has now adopted a much simpler device lineup: Okay, Good, Better and Best. So, is this the move that'll push the company out of the fringes of the mainstream and into the spotlight? It's certainly going to help.

LG to host an event in New York City on August 7th, could it be for a new Optimus G?

LG's got something cooking, and it's looking to let us in its kitchen in New York City on August 7th. Naturally, the important details -- like what we'll be seeing -- are nowhere to be found just yet, but given LG and Qualcomm's recent teasing of a new Optimus G packing a Snapdragon 800 SoC, it seems this could be a smartphone-centric affair. We'll have to wait and see until the dog days of summer, of course, but we'll be there to bring you the action when the time comes.
