Nexus 5 leaked in dual-tone White-variant, tipped for November 1 launch

 nexus-5leak-render-big.jpg
NewsWe have already seen a number of purported images of the upcoming Nexus 5 smartphone, but this time the infamous phone tipster, @evleaks has revealed the device in its alleged White colour variant. However, there is no word whether the leaked image is an official render, but smartphone it looks a lot like the device seen in leaks in the past, as well as the smartphone seen in the 'official' accidental listing of the $349 16GB Nexus 5 on the Google Play store. Importantly, the leak also indicates a November 1 launch date, though till now, no official event has been scheduled for the unveiling.

The tipster has posted the press render on Twitter and reveals a two-tone White colour variant with a black front panel and a white rear panel. Further, the render shows a homescreen which houses apps for camera, Chrome, hangout, dialer, Play Store and Google's Hub that houses usual Google apps like Gmail, Google Photos, Google+ among others. The tweet reads, "In white. 11/1.".
Rumoured specifications of the Nexus 5 include a 4.95-inch full-HD (1080p) IPS LCD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz, 2GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera with OIS and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. The alleged device has also been expected to include a host of sensors like ambient light, proximity, pressure as well as accelerometer, compass, notification LED and gyroscope.

5 Reasons Why The Walking Dead's Social Strategy Survives

Thanks to AMC’s The Walking Dead, zombies or “walkers” have become as popular as vampires ever were during the Twilight/True Blood craze. While the show definitely appeals to my horror-nerd side, its social media marketing strategy has fascinated the social media geek in me as well. The Walking Dead’s social strategy is very dynamic and is definitely deserving of a deeper look. Here are 5 reasons that AMC’s The Walking Dead’s social strategy survives.

1. Creative Use of Hashtags
The Walking Dead’s social strategy is very creative when it comes to using hashtags. For instance, on Twitter they had specific hashtags counting down to when a new episode would air. As a viewer, I found myself using the hashtags #TheWalkingDeadin15 and #TheWalkingDeadin5 rampantly in anticipation of the episode airing. This tactic is a great two-pronged approach. For the viewers, it’s fun to chat it up about how excited you are that the show is coming on and for people who might have forgotten or are new to the show, it’s a subtle reminder that they have 15 minutes to tune in. Brilliant. This isn’t hashtagging for hashtag’s sake, this is a creative!

 2. Cast & Crew Participation
What would make Twitter users lose their minds and blister their thumbs more than having cast members from The Walking Dead actually interact while the show is on? It’s pretty common that you will see Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun or Eulyn Womble chime in with their thoughts or commentary on a scene. Whether this is planned or organic, this is an incredibly powerful aspect of their social strategy. These days, fans expect some sort of access to their favorite stars on social media sites (especially Twitter), so participation during the show makes them frenzy. Even after the show is over, the cast stays pretty actively engaged with their communities on Twitter. This is awesome.

3. 2nd Screen Experience
Another particularly unique aspect of The Walking Dead’s social media strategy is their Story Sync 2nd screen experience. This is a unique way that viewers can have an interactive experience with the show that extends outside of traditional social media sites. Story Sync gives users the chance to engage in polls, participate in trivia questions and re-live their favorite scenes from the show. This might not be an overly “social” aspect of their strategy, however it gives people another way to engage and spend time with The Walking Dead. Overall, this is meant to immerse people IN the show while watching it.

4. The Dead Yourself App
This fun photo app is a way for fans to transform themselves into one of the walking dead. Available for both iOS and Android, this app has been downloaded and used by millions around the world.  Users are able to become zombies in photos and share those photos to social sites. The Walking Dead Team didn’t get lazy on this feature as the app has been updated with new photos and props to celebrate the new season. I have personally spent way too much time with this.

5 . The Talking Dead
The Talking Dead is a talk show hosted by Chris Hardwick that discusses the most recent episode with celebrity guests. I think The Talking Dead is a great aspect of their social media strategy because questions and discussions are taken directly from social media chatter. Of course, they do take live audience questions and phone calls as well. The show as a whole extends the experience and connection that fans have with The Walking Dead. Not only does the most recent episode spark a ton of social buzz, The Talking Dead follows up with even more! A particularly effective social 1-2 punch. AMC realized this was a great formula and created a similar talk show for their hit series Breaking Bad.

The Walking Dead has a great social strategy in place. They make a valiant effort to innovate, connect, participate and extend the whole fan experience. My hat is off to their social team.

What do you think about The Walking Dead’s social media efforts? Are there any other aspects that you found particularly interesting?

Nokia Asha 503 leaks, tipped for a Q4 launch

 nokia-asha-503-leaks-1-big.jpg
With numerous leaks, it's no secret that Nokia has in all probability been working on two Asha feature phones, the Asha 502 and Asha 503, considered the successors to the popular budget Asha 501phone.

While the Nokia Asha 502 was leaked recently, the latest to hit the rumour mill is its sibling, the Asha 503. The new leak comes courtesy of the popular phone tipster, @evleaks which has posted a render of the rumoured Nokia Asha 503 on Twitter. The tweet also hints that the phone might be announced this year.

The leaked render of the Asha 503 reveals the handset in multiple colours, with a large rear camera sensor sitting alongside an LED flash. Other features revealed by the leak include the power button, volume rocker buttons, audio jack port and Micro-USB port housed at the sides of the phone. Moreover, the leaked render shows the device in a glass casing which we assume would come bundled with the device. The leaked render further suggests that the phone will likely come preloaded with Line instant messaging app.

Google Search adds support for hashtags, pulls related info from Google+

Google Search adds support for hashtags, pulls related info from Google
The latest way Google is working social media into its search engine is with the use of familiar hashtags, but at least for now that doesn't include direct results from competitors like Facebook and Twitter. Available initially to users in the US and Canada, searches that include hashtags (like #ExpandNY, for example) will gain a right rail display relevant Google+ posts that were either shared publicly or to you. Even if you're not an avid user of the #, since Google+ autogenerates hashtags for many posts, it should be easy to find related info for pretty much any topic. According to Zaheed Sabur, there are also links to search said hashtag on other social sites, although which ones weren't specified. Even if you're in the right area you probably won't see the new feature just yet, as it's going live "within the next few hours."

Twitter announces Twitter Alerts for SMS and push notifications during emergencies

Twitter announces Twitter Alerts for SMS and push notifications during emergencies
We just saw Twitter broaden its use of push notifications for tweets it thinks you might find interesting, and the social network is now also expanding their use for a more serious matter. The company has just announced a new Twitter Alerts feature, which it says will deliver "accurate information from credible organizations" during an emergency or natural disaster. To ensure you don't miss them, those alerts will be delivered via SMS in addition to a push notification on Android or iOS, and you won't be getting notifications from just anyone who wants to send them. At launch, only a hundred odd NGOs and governmental agencies in the U.S., Japan and Korea are able to send the alerts, although Twitter says it will be expanding that to include organizations in other countries. You can sign up to receive the alerts by going to an organization's Alerts setup page; just add "/alerts" at the end of its Twitter URL, or find it on Twitter's list of participating organizations.

Google Hangouts bug sends messages to the wrong people

Google Hangouts and Talk users complain of messages being sent to the wrong people
We're hearing from tipsters and a number of other sources, including Google's own Product Forums, that a bug is causing some Google Hangouts messages to be sent to the wrong recipients. A few awkward situations have already ensued, according to TechCrunch, such as internal company communications being sent to ex-employees. The privacy bug seems to crop up when users of the old Google Talk platform try to connect with users who have migrated to the newer Hangouts service, so it sounds like it could be a transitional thing -- it's also reminiscent of a similar bug that hit Skype last year. Meanwhile, some of us here at Engadget are currently experiencing the more fundamental (though thankfully less embarrassing) problem of not being able to log onto Hangouts in the first place.

LA officials may delay school iPad rollout after students hack them in a week

LA iPad initiative hits the skids after students 'hack' iPads in under a week
Just a week after it began the first phase of putting iPads in the hands of all 640,000 students in the state, the Los Angeles school district already has a fight on its hands. In a matter of days, 300 children at Theodore Roosevelt High School managed to work around protective measures placed on the Apple tablets, giving them complete access to features -- including Facebook, Twitter and other apps -- that should otherwise have been blocked.

Students bypassed the security lock on the device by deleting a personal profile preloaded in the settings -- a simple trick that has the school district police chief recommending the board limit the $1 billion rollout before it turns into a "runaway train scenario." For now, officials have banned home use of the iPads while they assess ways to better restrict access -- they would have gotten away with it, too, if it wasn't for those meddling kids.

Twitter gets pushy with notifications for recommended tweets

DNP Twitter reveals push notificationbased tailored recommendation update for Android, iOS
Twitter is one of the best ways to keep abreast of breaking news, but getting caught up on anything meaningful that happened on a given day can take hours of scrolling. To combat this, the service is now rolling out a push notification-based recommendation system that builds on @MagicRecs, the account that sends tailored content-suggestions based on who you follow. A trip to the Android and iOS settings menu is all it takes to enable (or disable) a buzz when there are favorites and retweets the platform thinks you might dig. If you can't spend all day watching your timeline but still want to stay in the loop, this could be perfect middle ground. Now if you'll excuse us, we just got word that Emergency Puppy tweeted out a new picture.

Blackberry Launches BBM Service for Android and iOS

BBM service for android and ios

Vizio ships 11.6-inch Windows 8 Tablet PC for $600

Vizio ships 116inch Windows 8 tablet for $600

While Samsung may be dominating the Windows tablet news lately, it isn't alone -- Vizio is now shipping its promised 11.6-inch Windows 8 Tablet PC. The slate is selling for $600 with the same specs we saw back at the January unveiling. Unfortunately, they haven't aged gracefully in the past half-year. While we like the 1080p display, 64GB SSD, front-facing 2MP camera and stereo speakers, the launch also preserves the slightly older AMD Z-60 processor, 2GB of RAM and five hours of battery life. Where's our Temash upgrade, Vizio? The tablet still has more audiovisual oomph than usual, though, so it may be worth swinging past Vizio's site for a closer look.

Sony teases new smartwatch announcement for next week

Sony teases new smartwatch announcement for next week,

Sony's got us waiting on a super-sized Xperia smartphone, but it could have a new wearable to show Mobile Asia Expo attendees in Shanghai next week. In recent days, its Sony Xperia account has been tweeting cryptically about its existing Smartwatch, the demand for smart devices and (well, it is Sony) the company's portable tech heritage. Sony is set to host a Shanghai-based media event on Tuesday next week, and we'll be there to cover it.

PlayStation 3 firmware update coming June 27th, promises to fix bricked systems

PlayStation 3 firmware update fix coming June 27th, promises to fix bricked systems

Are you one of the "small number" of folks with a PlayStation 3 that was bricked in this week's 4.45 firmware update? Though Sony's been aware of the issue since the update launched, apparently a fix isn't coming until June 27th -- that's nine days after 4.45 launched to an unsuspecting populace. The PlayStation Europe Twitter account announced as much this morning in a tweet. "We have identified the issue related to PS3 software update (4.45) that impacted a small number of PS3 systems earlier this week," the feed reads.

"A new system software update is planned to be released on June 27 that resolves that issue," it adds. There's also a bit of an apology, but that won't do much for the folks who are without their PlayStation 3 for the next six days. PlayStation's US arm also confirmed that the update will arrive in North America on the same date.

Report: Twitter to launch location-based ads later this year

Twitter has been steadily ramping up its ad efforts this year, first bringing promoted tweets to mobile devices and more recently opening up ad buying to all US users. Now, according to Ad Age, the social network is preparing to introduce promoted tweets based on your location. In addition to displaying nearby retailers, this feature could showcase deals and promotions at stores in your area. Twitter already display's different advertisers' tweets based on general metro areas, but drilling down into specific geo-coordinates will naturally deliver more relevant adverts. Facebook, meanwhile, has been serving up content based on a user's ZIP code since 2011; so a little catch-up is definitely in order. Twitter's targeted ads will supposedly launch at the end of the year, just in time for that all-important retail rush.

AOL Reader launches into private beta, thanks Google for the opportunity

AOL Reader launches into private beta, thanks Google for the opportunity

Google: "Eh, we're kind of over this Reader thing. Let's go launch some balloons."

AOL: "Why, thanks guys -- don't mind if we do!"

The above mentioned quotes are still unofficial, mind you, but it appears that AOL (disclaimer: that's Engadget's parent company) is joining Feedly and Digg in an effort to capture the audiences who will soon be forced to flee from Google's Reader product. AOL Reader launched today in beta form, promising to collect "all your favorite websites, in one place." It appears that the design language follows that introduced in the entity's Alto mail product, and if you've forgotten your AOL password, fret not -- those who request (and receive) an invite will be able to sign in via Facebook, Google or Twitter. Oh, and judging by the shot above, it's designed to work universally across screen sizes and devices, including your tablets, phones, desktops, laptops and space-age computational creations. Of note, it appears that the sign-up forms aren't entirely active just yet, as we're hearing that the bona fide launch won't occur until next week.

Update: We've confirmed that invites will be accepted starting on Monday, June 24th.

Twitter Is Launching Its Own Photosharing Service

Twitter has been completely emphatic about where developers should stake a claim, with Twitter Platform Lead Ryan Sarver warning the ecosystem to stay away from building “client apps that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience.”

Well if Sarver stays true to his word the Twitpics and Yfrogs of the world can just give it up now. According to multiple sources, Twitter is on the verge of announcing its own built in Twitpic competitor. Like tomorrow, if things go according to plan (naturally this post might change that).

This shouldn’t really come as a surprise to anyone,  as photosharing is the next logical step of Twitter expanding its in app experience. It’s basically grabbing at low hanging fruit.

Twitter is flinging money around; It just spent $40 million on power user client Tweetdeck which represents 13% of its userbase. It’s only natural that they would spend more resources on photosharing, especially considering how much money is being poured into the white hot space and that images were the crux of the success of competitor Facebook.

I’ve got no details on what exactly the photosharing URL shortener will be if any (Twitter has owned Twimg.com for a long time) or what the Twitter for Photos product will look like. Just that it’s coming, soon. And if they’re smart they’ll put ads on it.
